Consistently ranked among the best places to live in Wisconsin, its 21,827 residents (2020) share a downtown that grew from a rail depot in a settlement once called Peatville, for the peat cut from its soils. It has been a city since 1963 and Madison's polished northwestern shoulder ever since.
Between Middleton and Verona runs some of Dane County's best driving: Highway M and the county roads thread the Town of Middleton's farm hills — the same terrain the Ice Age National Scenic Trail follows on its way south past Verona. The commute to the game is, frankly, part of the show.
