About Mount Vernon, Wisconsin
Mount Vernon grew up around the Big Spring on Mount Vernon Creek, a branch of the Sugar River, where the Britts family — Virginians who named the settlement for Mount Vernon back home — built a mill in 1847. A grist mill followed in 1858, grinding for farmers hauling freight on the old lead roads; today the spring anchors Donald Park, one of Dane County's quietest and best.
The valley between Mount Vernon and Verona is textbook Driftless: trout water, ridge roads, red barns. It's the kind of six miles that makes the drive to dinner feel like part of the evening.
