Oregon began at Rome Corners, settled in 1841 where the old Lead Road from Mineral Point crossed the Madison–Janesville mail route — and it kept the crossroads habit: US 14 and WIS 138 meet at the village's corner today. The railroad renamed the place Oregon on its 1864 maps, the village incorporated in 1881, and 11,179 people (2020) now call it home at the southern edge of the Madison area.
Oregon and Verona anchor southwest Dane County's school-rivalry belt, eight miles of farmland apart — close enough that plenty of Friday nights split a family between Panther and Wildcat bleachers before everyone reconvenes over a basket of wings.
